Glide has released a new suite of table controls for the Data Editor, bringing search, sort, and filter capabilities directly into the toolbar. The update works across Glide Tables, Big Tables, and external data sources, giving builders more control over how they view and manage data without leaving the editor.
The company announced the update on LinkedIn and directed users to its changelog for details. According to the post, the new controls are built directly into the Data Editor tab, allowing users to filter, sort, and search their data without switching contexts.
Query Pushdown for External Sources
The most significant technical detail involves how the controls handle queryable data sources. For external databases and connected services, search and filter operations are pushed down into the underlying query itself. This means users aren't limited to viewing or filtering only the rows currently loaded into the interface.
This approach addresses a common limitation in data editors: when working with large external datasets, local filtering typically only applies to whatever subset of rows has been fetched. By pushing filters into the query, Glide ensures that search and filter operations return results from the entire dataset, not just cached rows.
The distinction matters for builders working with production databases, Airtable bases, or other connected data sources where row counts can scale into the thousands or tens of thousands. Previously, manipulating large tables often required switching between Glide and the source system; now, more of that work can happen directly in the Data Editor.
Unified Experience Across Table Types
The controls work identically across Glide's different table types. Whether a builder is working with a native Glide Table, a Big Table optimized for large datasets, or an external source like a SQL database, the same toolbar controls apply. This consistency simplifies the development experience, particularly for teams managing apps that pull from multiple data sources.
Glide has steadily expanded its data layer over the past year, introducing Big Tables and deeper integrations with external databases. The new controls fit into that trajectory, making the Data Editor more capable as a standalone tool for exploring and managing data during app development.
The update is live now and available to all Glide users. Full details are available on the Glide changelog.
