Framer Overhauls Custom Fonts with Typeface Grouping and Real-Time Previews
Framer has released its November update focused on a complete redesign of how designers work with custom fonts. The update introduces typeface grouping, real-time previews, improved variable font support, and enhanced management workflows.
The redesign addresses long-standing friction points in font management. Previously, designers working with multiple weights and styles of the same typeface had to manage each variant separately. The new typeface grouping system automatically organizes related font files under a single family name, mirroring how designers conceptualize typography.
Real-time previews now let users see exactly how fonts will render before applying them to text layers. This eliminates the trial-and-error workflow of uploading a font, applying it to test text, and adjusting. The preview system works across both standard fonts and variable fonts, showing the full range of available weights and styles in the font picker interface.
Better Variable Font Support
Variable fonts, which pack multiple weights and styles into a single file, receive expanded property controls in this update. Framer now surfaces more granular adjustment options for variable font axes, including weight, width, slant, and custom axes defined by type designers. This gives designers more precise control over typography without juggling multiple static font files.
The improved management flow streamlines uploading, organizing, and removing custom fonts from projects. Font files now display file size and format information directly in the asset panel, making it easier to optimize for performance. Designers can also bulk-select and remove unused fonts, helping keep project file sizes in check.
Context in Framer's Design Tool Evolution
The font update follows Framer's pattern of refining core design tools. Recent updates have included AI-powered layer renaming and ticker effects for continuous animations, each addressing specific workflow friction points.
For teams managing design systems across multiple sites, the typeface grouping feature should reduce confusion. When a brand uses a custom font family with six or eight weights, those variants now appear as a single organized family rather than scattered individual files.
The update is available now to all Framer users. The company has not indicated whether these font improvements will extend to its recently expanded CMS translation features, which currently handle content localization but not font subsetting for different character sets.
Framer competes with Webflow and Figma in the design-to-web space, where typography handling directly impacts both designer experience and site performance. The focus on variable fonts aligns with broader web performance trends, as variable fonts can significantly reduce the number of HTTP requests needed to load a page with multiple font weights.
