Airtable Omni Builds Bases Interfaces and Automations from Prompts

Omni can now turn a messy spreadsheet into an Airtable base, write code for an interface page and wire up an automation from a description. The upgraded assistant can carry larger jobs from the initial prompt through to a finished build.

Airtable announced the upgrade in a LinkedIn post, alongside a phased rollout and immediate access through AI Labs.

Omni Takes On Complete Builds

The upgrade expands the size and range of jobs Omni can complete. Airtable describes it as faster, able to handle bigger tasks and capable of carrying work through from start to finish.

For spreadsheet imports, the starting point can be messy data rather than a prepared Airtable structure. You bring the spreadsheet into Omni and it builds that information into a base. The announcement does not set out required column formats or preparation steps.

Interface building starts with a written description. Omni uses that description to write the code for an interface page. This goes beyond arranging existing fields by hand: the prompt becomes the specification for the page, and Omni produces the code.

Automation building follows the same pattern. You describe the workflow and Omni wires up the automation. It does not activate the result automatically. The automation is left off so that it can be reviewed first.

This is a broader brief than a single generated field or isolated suggestion. The three examples cover the data layer, the interface and the workflow around it. Airtable’s earlier AI app-building work included Cobuilder, which was presented as instant no-code app creation. Omni’s upgrade is described through specific tasks that span several parts of a base.

Review Controls Sit Inside the Omni Workflow

Omni includes two controls for changes that need checking. Generated automations remain switched off, while destructive actions require confirmation before Omni proceeds.

That creates a review point between generation and execution. A builder can inspect an automation’s trigger and actions before enabling it. If a requested task would remove or overwrite something, Omni asks first rather than completing the destructive action immediately.

The workflow described in the announcement looks like this:

  1. 1

    Provide the input

upload a spreadsheet or describe an interface or workflow

  2. 2

    Let Omni build

it creates the base, writes the interface code or wires the automation

  3. 3

    Review the result

check the generated structure, page or workflow

  4. 4

    Confirm sensitive changes

approve any destructive action before it runs

  5. 5

    Activate the automation

switch it on after reviewing the configuration

These controls apply at different stages. Confirmation covers destructive actions during the job. The disabled state covers the automation after Omni has configured it.

Access Starts Through AI Labs

The upgraded Omni is rolling out over the next few weeks. Teams that want access during the rollout can use AI Labs.

An administrator must enable AI Labs from the Airtable admin panel. Once enabled, it provides access to the upgraded Omni before the wider rollout reaches the account.

The release follows other additions that move more work into Airtable itself, including Canvas building live apps from existing base data and added Agent admin controls for field permissions and HIPAA support. This Omni update covers creating the underlying base, interface and automation from natural-language instructions or an existing spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is Airtable Omni?

Airtable Omni is an AI assistant that can build a base from a messy spreadsheet, write code for an interface page and configure an automation from a description. The upgraded version is designed to carry larger jobs through from start to finish.

How does Omni create an automation?

You describe the workflow and Omni wires up the automation. It leaves the automation switched off so that you can review it before activation.

When is Omni available?

The upgrade is rolling out over the next few weeks. Administrators can get access during the rollout by enabling AI Labs in the admin panel.

Does Omni ask before deleting or changing data?

Omni asks for confirmation before taking destructive actions. The announcement does not list the individual actions covered by this confirmation step.
