What to expect

RSECon26 brings the research software community to Sheffield and online from 9–11 September 2026 for three days of ideas, strategy and connection.

The annual Research Software Engineering Conference is the flagship event of the Society of Research Software Engineering. It offers a forum for people across research and technology to exchange ideas, debate strategic challenges and develop a collective vision for the future of Research Software Engineering. Topics include AI, high-performance computing (HPC) and data stewardship, alongside the wider professional, institutional and methodological questions shaping research software.

Why attend RSECon26?

Research Software Engineers contribute throughout the research lifecycle, from project design and planning to delivery, impact and dissemination. Yet recognition of the role remains uneven between institutions, and software is not always acknowledged as a fundamental research product. RSECon26 puts those issues at the centre of the conversation, exploring how the profession can secure its place as a research career in its own right.

The conference will consider how long-term career frameworks can reflect the distinctive combination of computational expertise, methodological innovation and research understanding that RSEs bring. It is also an opportunity to help shape an environment in which the people who build research software receive appropriate recognition for their contribution to discovery.

Attendees can expect opportunities to:

  • Share practical ideas and perspectives from across the research software community
  • Debate strategies for strengthening the visibility and recognition of RSE work
  • Discuss AI, HPC, data stewardship and the changing technical research landscape
  • Contribute to collective thinking about sustainable RSE careers
  • Connect with peers working across software, research and technical practice

Who is it for?

RSECon26 is aimed at research software engineers, researchers, technical experts and PhD students, as well as anyone interested in how software enables modern research. Its broad remit makes it relevant both to established RSE professionals and to people exploring research software as a career or essential part of their work.
