Xano Turns Realtime v2 Messages Into Full Handlers

Realtime v2 turns websocket messages into full handlers built with the Xano function stack. Builders can now validate incoming payloads, control access using their own data and personalise the message sent to each recipient.

In its LinkedIn post, Xano positions realtime behaviour as application logic rather than a separate messaging layer. That logic now uses the same function stack and development tools available elsewhere in a Xano backend.

Realtime v2 Adds Logic to Websocket Messages

Each websocket message can run through a handler. The handler can check whether its payload has the expected data before processing it. It can also authorise connections and channel joins against records stored in the application.

Personalisation happens at the recipient level. A handler can change what each connected recipient receives, rather than broadcasting the same result to everyone on a channel.

CapabilityWhat Realtime v2 controls
Payload validationChecks websocket message data
Connection authorisationDecides who can connect using application data
Channel authorisationControls who can join a channel
Recipient personalisationChanges what each recipient receives
Tenant supportAdds realtime logic for tenant-based applications

These controls all sit inside the Xano function stack. A realtime handler can therefore be managed as part of the backend rather than through a separate websocket workflow.

Development Tools Now Cover Realtime Logic

Realtime v2 handlers work with drafts and branches, giving teams a route to develop changes without immediately replacing running logic. Request history and debugging provide records for inspecting behaviour, while version history and rollback cover changes after deployment.

Role-based access control, or RBAC, also applies to this work. Teams can manage who has permission to change realtime logic alongside their other Xano development permissions.

Existing Realtime implementations can continue running while a team builds with v2. Xano has not required an immediate replacement of the current setup, so both can remain in place during development.

Realtime v2 is available on Essential plans and above. It can be accessed through the Xano application.

Frequently asked questions

What is Xano Realtime v2?

Xano Realtime v2 is a system for processing websocket messages as handlers using the Xano function stack. It supports payload validation, connection and channel authorisation, recipient personalisation and tenants.

Which Xano plan includes Realtime v2?

Realtime v2 is available on Essential plans and above. The announcement does not state the price of the Essential plan.

Can existing Realtime implementations keep running?

Yes. Existing Realtime implementations can continue to run while teams build their handlers in Realtime v2.
