Vercel is opening its real-user performance monitoring to a much broader audience. The company’s new Speed Insights free tier is available on every plan, covers any number of projects and includes 10,000 events per team every 30 days.
The change, announced in Vercel’s changelog on August 25, removes an awkward limitation from the platform’s previous pricing structure. Free Speed Insights access had been restricted to one project on the Hobby plan. Teams moving to Pro lost that access unless they purchased the monitoring product as an add-on.
Now, the free allocation carries across plan upgrades. Customers only need to pay if they want capabilities beyond the included tier.
A More Practical Baseline for Small Teams
Speed Insights collects performance information from real visitors rather than relying solely on synthetic tests conducted under controlled conditions. That gives developers a high-level view of how deployed applications behave across the devices, connections and locations used by their actual audience.
For small businesses and independent builders, making this data available without an additional subscription lowers the cost of spotting performance regressions. A site can perform well on a developer’s laptop while loading slowly for customers on mobile networks or less capable hardware. Real-user data helps expose that gap.
The free tier’s main terms are straightforward:
- It is available on every Vercel plan.
- Teams can use it across any number of projects.
- Each team receives 10,000 events every 30 days.
- It provides a high-level performance overview based on real-user activity.
The allowance is set at the team level, so organizations running multiple projects will share the 10,000 events among them. Vercel’s announcement does not specify a separate event allocation for each project.
This is particularly useful for teams with several small production sites, landing pages or early-stage applications. Under the old Hobby restriction, they had to select a single project for free monitoring. The new structure trades that project cap for one shared usage allowance.
Speed Insights Plus Remains the Paid Option
Vercel has renamed the paid version of the product Speed Insights Plus. It includes deeper diagnostics and historical data, positioning the free tier as an overview rather than a complete performance investigation suite.
Existing paying customers are not being moved to a reduced product. According to Vercel, their capabilities and pricing remain unchanged; only the product name has changed. The company has not announced new pricing for Plus as part of this update.
Developers can enable reporting by installing the package documented in the Speed Insights quickstart:
npm install @vercel/speed-insights
They must then add the relevant Speed Insights component or integration to their application, following the instructions for its framework. Teams with an existing integration can open the Speed Insights dashboard to review available data.
The update does not make every diagnostic feature free, nor does it eliminate usage limits. Its significance is narrower but practical: baseline production performance monitoring no longer disappears when a team graduates from Hobby to Pro, and builders can monitor more than one project without immediately buying an add-on.
