Vercel Lets AI Agents Buy Domains Through Its CLI

AI agents can now search for, price and start buying domains through the Vercel CLI. The agent can handle the workflow, but it cannot complete a transaction without the user approving the spend.

According to the Vercel changelog, builders can prompt an agent to find and buy a domain for a site. The CLI includes an agent-facing skill that guides the agent through each stage.

How Vercel CLI Domain Buying Works

The workflow uses four CLI commands. An agent can find possible names with vercel domains search, then use vercel domains check and vercel domains price to confirm availability and registrar pricing. It starts the transaction with vercel domains buy.

  1. 1

    Search for a domain

the agent runs `vercel domains search` to find candidates

  2. 2

    Check availability

`vercel domains check` confirms whether a domain can be registered

  3. 3

    Review the price

`vercel domains price` returns registrar pricing

  4. 4

    Start the purchase

`vercel domains buy` initiates the transaction

  5. 5

    Approve the order

the user confirms the price, auto-renewal and registrant details

When an agent runs the purchase command non-interactively, the CLI returns a structured, machine-readable error instead of spending money. That response includes suggested next commands, allowing the agent to hand control back to the user.

The user can then approve the quoted price, choose whether the domain should renew automatically and confirm the registrant contact details. Approval can happen interactively or through the Vercel dashboard.

Purchase Approval Stays With the User

The approval checkpoint separates domain research from the financial transaction. Agents can inspect names, availability and prices, then prepare the purchase. The final decision remains with the account holder.

Because the error is structured for machines, an agent can understand why the command stopped and what should happen next. It does not need to interpret an unstructured failure message or repeatedly attempt the transaction.

The update covers both the agent workflow and the CLI commands behind it. Builders can ask for a domain in natural language while retaining direct control over the purchase settings and payment approval.
