Discord Open-Sources Osprey Investigation Tool and Coop Safety Platform

Discord has released two of its internal trust and safety tools as open-source projects through ROOST, a nonprofit organization focused on improving platform safety infrastructure. The move makes Discord's Osprey investigation tool and Coop content review platform available to other organizations struggling with moderation at scale.

Osprey, announced on LinkedIn by ROOST, is an investigation and incident response tool that Discord's safety team has used internally to understand platform activity and take action at scale. The tool allows trust and safety teams to track patterns, investigate user reports, and coordinate responses to emerging threats.

Coop, which comes from Cove's acquisition by ROOST, provides review infrastructure for identifying and removing harmful content. The platform handles the workflow of content moderation: flagging potential violations, routing them to reviewers, and tracking decisions across teams. ROOST acquired Cove's technology specifically to release it as open-source infrastructure.

Both tools address a practical problem for platforms of any size: building effective safety operations requires significant engineering resources, and most teams end up building similar systems from scratch. Discord's decision to open-source Osprey suggests the company sees value in standardizing investigation workflows across the industry, rather than treating safety tooling as proprietary advantage.

Why Open Source Safety Tools

ROOST's approach differs from commercial trust and safety vendors by making the tooling freely available and transparent. Organizations can audit the code, customize workflows to their needs, and contribute improvements back to the community. For smaller platforms, this removes the barrier of either building custom safety infrastructure or paying for enterprise moderation solutions.

The timing follows broader industry pressure to improve platform safety without relying solely on automated systems or outsourced moderation. Discord has invested heavily in its safety operations, previously shipping community server fixes and expanding its developer tools. Releasing Osprey suggests the company is confident in its approach and willing to share it.

For ROOST, managing these projects as open source means maintaining them independently of Discord's internal priorities. The nonprofit structure lets other organizations contribute to development and ensures the tools remain accessible regardless of changes to Discord's own operations.

What This Means for Platform Builders

Platforms using community tools like Slack, Circle, or Bettermode often struggle with moderation as they grow. Osprey and Coop provide a foundation for building safety operations without starting from zero. The tools are designed to work at scale, handling the complexity that emerges when communities grow beyond manual review.

Osprey handles investigation workflows: tracking user behavior across incidents, identifying patterns in reports, and coordinating team responses. Coop manages the review pipeline: presenting content to moderators, recording decisions, and maintaining audit trails. Together, they cover the core functions that safety teams need but often lack resources to build properly.

The open-source model also means platforms can adapt the tools to their specific policies and workflows, rather than conforming to a vendor's assumptions about how moderation should work. This flexibility matters for communities with unique safety requirements or regulatory constraints.

ROOST has not yet published detailed documentation or deployment guides, but the announcement indicates both tools are available now. Organizations interested in using Osprey or Coop can find more information through ROOST's website.
