Beehiiv Releases Automations v4 With A/B Testing and Multi-Branch Workflow Builder

Beehiiv released Automations v4, a major overhaul of its workflow automation system that brings A/B testing and multi-branch logic to newsletter creators. The update, announced on LinkedIn March 12, represents the platform's most significant automation release to date.

The new version introduces A/B testing directly within automated email sequences, allowing creators to test subject lines, content, or send times without manual intervention. Beehiiv positions this as a way for smaller publishers to access optimization capabilities typically reserved for enterprise email platforms.

Multi-Branch Logic and Random Cohorts

Automations v4 adds multi-split and random cohort branching, enabling creators to segment subscribers into multiple paths based on behavior or random assignment. The random cohort feature is particularly useful for testing different onboarding sequences or content strategies with statistically valid sample groups.

The platform also introduced reconnecting branches, which allow separate automation paths to merge back together. This addresses a common workflow limitation where subscribers who diverged early in a sequence couldn't be brought back into a unified path later.

Drag-and-Drop Editor and Bulk Actions

Beehiiv rebuilt its automation editor with a drag-and-drop interface, following similar workflow improvements the company has rolled out across its platform. The visual builder lets users construct complex workflows without writing code or navigating nested menus.

Bulk actions allow creators to apply changes across multiple automation nodes simultaneously. For newsletters managing dozens of automated sequences, this reduces the time required to update triggers, delays, or content across workflows.

Advanced analytics provide granular visibility into automation performance, including open rates, click rates, and conversion metrics for each branch and variant. The analytics dashboard tracks subscriber progression through workflows and identifies drop-off points.

Context for Newsletter Creators

The update arrives as newsletter platforms compete on automation sophistication. ConvertKit and Mailchimp have long offered visual automation builders, but Beehiiv's A/B testing integration and multi-branch logic put it closer to enterprise tools like Klaviyo.

Beehiiv has been rapidly expanding its feature set beyond basic email sending. The company recently added webinars, metered paywalls, and podcast hosting as it positions itself as an all-in-one creator platform. Automations v4 continues this trajectory, giving creators more control over subscriber journeys without requiring technical expertise.

For creators building businesses around newsletters, the ability to test and optimize automated sequences could directly impact revenue. A well-optimized welcome sequence or re-engagement campaign can significantly improve subscriber lifetime value, particularly for paid newsletters or those monetizing through ads and sponsorships.

Automations v4 is available now to all Beehiiv users. The company has not specified whether advanced features like A/B testing or random cohorts are limited to paid tiers, though previous automation capabilities have been accessible across all plan levels.
