About this event

What to expect

As artificial intelligence systems become deeply embedded in policing, healthcare, immigration, welfare systems, and workplace management, critical questions emerge about their impact on equality and human rights. While AI tools are often promoted as solutions to bias and inequality, research shows they frequently replicate and amplify existing social disparities. This full-day academic workshop at the University of Southampton brings together scholars and practitioners to examine how algorithmic systems affect marginalized communities and what legal frameworks can address these harms.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for researchers, legal practitioners, policymakers, and advocates working at the intersection of technology, equality, and law. The event welcomes perspectives from across disciplines including legal studies, sociology, computer science, ethics, and public policy. Both academics and practitioners concerned with AI governance, discrimination law, and social justice will find valuable insights and networking opportunities.

Key Themes

The workshop explores four major areas where AI intersects with equality concerns:

Women, Equality and AI examines feminist perspectives on AI ethics and governance, with particular attention to gendered impacts in reproductive health, domestic work, and caregiving contexts.

Labour Market Inequality and AI investigates how workplace AI affects workers, including the regulation of platform work, algorithmic management systems, and the right to equal pay for equal work.

AI as a Solution to Inequality considers how AI might advance equality through improved accountability, transparency, and explainability mechanisms.

AI and Discrimination takes a broad view of how AI relates to all forms of discrimination, including intersectional approaches, decolonial governance frameworks, racialized impacts, and disability justice.

Format and Participation

Organized by the Research Centre for Law and Technology and Stefan Cross Centre for Women, Equality and Law, this in-person workshop runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
