About this event

What to expect

Learn to formalize mathematics using Lean, the cutting-edge interactive proof assistant that's transforming how mathematicians verify and share mathematical knowledge. This intensive two-week summer school will equip you with the skills to contribute to global, digital mathematical libraries where every theorem is fully computer-verified.

What You'll Learn

This summer school introduces participants to the revolutionary technology of computational proof assistants and the emerging field of formalized mathematics. You'll master Lean, starting from installation and basic usage through to independent formalization projects. The curriculum covers core formalization techniques, metaprogramming for creating custom tactics and automation, and autoformalization methods that bridge natural mathematical language with formal proof systems.

The school follows an interactive format that alternates short lectures with extended hands-on tutorial sessions. During the first week, you'll build foundational skills through guided exercises. In the second week, you'll work in small groups on independent formalization projects focused on your own mathematical interests—whether that's algebra, topology, analysis, or another area. General lectures throughout the program will showcase cutting-edge research in formalization theory and practice, giving you insight into where the field is heading.

Who Should Attend

This program is designed for students and researchers who want to join the formalization revolution. You should have completed at least one undergraduate programming course and have a mathematical area of interest that will anchor your formalization project. Whether you're a graduate student looking to formalize results from your research, an undergraduate curious about the intersection of mathematics and computer science, or a working mathematician interested in contributing to Lean's growing mathematical library, this summer school provides the foundation you need.

Program Structure

The school runs from July 7-18, 2026, hosted by ICARM in collaboration with Imperial College London. Day one covers installation and provides a technology overview. Subsequent days blend theory with practice—you'll attend lectures on formalization principles while spending substantial time in interactive tutorials where you'll write proofs, receive immediate
