About this event

What to expect

The Cybernetics Conversation 2026 offers a unique three-day exploration of how cybernetics shapes our understanding of AI, robotics, design, organisation, and complex systems. Taking place at Loughborough University from 1-3 July 2026, this isn't your typical academic conference — it's an interactive learning experience where participants actively engage with ideas, chart their own path through the material, and take ownership of their learning journey.

What Makes This Event Different

Rather than passive lectures, attendees will directly engage with cutting-edge cybernetics theory and practice across multiple dimensions: robotics, AI, design, organisation, art, music, and the philosophical foundations that underpin them all. The event is designed holistically, with each day building on the last to create a cohesive exploration of how cybernetic principles address 21st-century challenges.

Programme Highlights

Day 1 (Wednesday, 1 July) begins at 11am with scene-setting led by Peter Kawalek, followed by afternoon sessions celebrating Stafford Beer's centenary, exploring the Viable Operating Model, and examining the state of healthcare systems through a cybernetics lens.

Day 2 (Thursday, 2 July) features Dan Davies discussing "The Unaccountability Machine" in the morning, with afternoon sessions diving into information and cybernetics, covering topics from Badlands to quantum computing.

Day 3 (Friday, 3 July) concludes with morning reflections on ethics and AI, synthesising the week's insights into actionable frameworks.

Who Should Attend

This event suits anyone interested in understanding how systems thinking and cybernetics can address complex challenges in technology, healthcare, business, and social policy. Whether you're a researcher, practitioner, student, or simply curious about how cybernetic principles influence AI development and organisational design, you'll find valuable perspectives here.

Practical Information
