About this event

What to expect

Learn to build your own machine learning model in this hands-on workshop at Leicester's LCB Depot. Designed for artists and creators curious about what happens "under the hood" of AI, this 4-hour session demystifies machine learning by teaching you to train a Micro:bit device to recognise physical movements and gestures using your own small data sets.

What You'll Learn

Led by Dr Sean Clark, an artist researcher and curator with over 20 years of experience in art and technology, you'll discover how to create a closed-off, small data set AI model trained specifically for movement and gesture recognition. Using Micro:bit CreateAI, a free, browser-based tool from the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, you'll collect motion data from the device's accelerometer, train a machine learning model to detect patterns in movements like clapping, waving, or jumping, then program your Micro:bit to run that model independently.

By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with your very own personally trained interactive artwork and a deeper understanding of how AI tools work beyond the popular generative models. The session also provides insight into how pop culture AI tools function and how the technology is developing.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is perfect for anyone with an interest in AI who wants to understand the technology through practical, hands-on work. You don't need advanced programming skills—just curiosity and willingness to engage with the creative possibilities of machine learning. The session balances technical learning with discussion about how AI is developing and its influence on creativity.

Note: This is not a high-level programming course, nor does it cover making generative artworks with language or image models like ChatGPT or Midjourney.

What to Bring

You'll need a laptop with internet access and a web browser (Chrome recommended), plus a Micro:bit with micro USB cable. If you need to borrow equipment, you can select a laptop or Micro:bit as an add-on when booking your ticket.
