About this event

What to expect

JUG Noord’s Leeuwarden meetup on 25 August 2026 offers practical guidance on documenting legacy REST APIs and recording better architecture decisions.

Hosted at ING Hazel in Leeuwarden, this evening event brings together Java and JVM practitioners for two English-language sessions focused on problems that engineering teams regularly encounter: undocumented services and unclear technical decision-making.

From legacy REST to OpenAPI

Sijtsche Smeman of Get There will explain how teams can introduce OpenAPI specifications to existing REST services. Drawing on her current project at DUO, she will show how to document endpoints that were created without a formal specification and make the application use that specification.

The session explores how OpenAPI can provide the well-documented interface that older REST landscapes often lack, helping developers understand service behaviour without repeatedly digging through source code. Sijtsche brings 25 years of Java experience, including 18 years as a freelancer, and combines backend development with coordination roles such as scrum master and project lead.

Effective architectural decision records

Piet van Dongen of OpenValue will present Architectural Decision Records as a practical form of just-in-time, just-enough documentation. Rather than producing walls of text or relying on subjective pros-and-cons debates, attendees will learn how to:

  • Structure an ADR so that people will read and use it
  • Turn subjective preferences into more objective choices
  • Create editable diagrams quickly
  • Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Report decisions using effective language and audience-appropriate diagrams

Piet is a senior software architect and engineering consultant whose work spans resilient architecture, short development cycles, cloud migration and engineering education. He has spoken at international events including AWS re:Invent, DevOpsDays, Codemotion and Devoxx.

Schedule and venue details

Doors open at 16:30 CEST, with the first talk beginning at 17:00. Food and drinks will be provided between the sessions, creating time to meet other developers and discuss the material.…
