About this event

What to expect

This in-person R programming meetup brings together two compelling data science presentations that explore gender equity in urban transport and advanced Shiny application development. Taking place on International Women's Day week, the event showcases how R can be used to uncover social inequalities and build interactive public-facing tools.

Using R to Uncover Gender Differences in Urban Mobility

Alessia Calafiore, Lecturer in Sustainability and Urban Data Science at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, will demonstrate how R can analyse Scottish Travel Survey data to identify gender disparities in urban mobility patterns. For decades, transport systems have been designed around a "default" male user, overlooking the diverse mobility needs of women and other genders. Her talk presents initial findings from the ESRC-funded Mobilising Gender Data project, examining how trip purposes, mode choices, safety concerns, and caregiving-related travel differ by gender.

This research sits at the intersection of Urban Planning, Geography and Computer Science, using spatially informed computational methods to understand the relationship between human behaviours and urban contexts. The work blends traditional and new data sources to provide quantifiable evidence for equitable transport policy making. As co-lead of the CHASS Research Theme - Future Cities, Alessia brings expertise in managing sustainability transitions within urban environments.

Choose Your Own Shiny Adventure: The Sequel

Nevil Hopley, Senior Data Analyst at the Scottish Qualifications Authority, returns to complete his interactive presentation on SQA's first publicly available Shiny app. Following January's first half, this audience-driven "choose your own adventure" format lets attendees decide which features and development challenges they want to explore. The app demonstrates advanced Shiny techniques for building public-facing data tools. You can start exploring the NQ Progression app before the session.

This meetup is ideal for R users interested in social data science, transport analytics, interactive visualisation, or Shiny application development. Whether you're working in academia, government, or data science roles, you'll gain practical insights into using R for policy-relevant research and public
