What to expect

Explore secure AI adoption, OT security and the human–machine relationship with critical infrastructure expert Matthew Luallen on 19 August 2026.

This online Author Spotlight™ offers a rare opportunity to hear how three decades of cyber-physical security experience have shaped Luallen’s thinking about AI. Running from 18:00 to 20:00, the network event is hosted by Birmingham UK Cyber Security for Control Systems, a Birmingham-based community focused on protecting control systems and critical infrastructure.

People, AI and cyber-physical security

Matthew Luallen is the author of What the Cursor Holds and founder and principal advisor of Sph3r3, LLC. His work helps organisations adopt AI securely across cybersecurity strategy, AI governance and cyber-physical systems, treating security as a foundation rather than an optional feature.

His perspective draws on extensive experience defending critical infrastructure. Luallen co-founded three control-system cybersecurity companies: Encari, which supported North American power-grid operators with NERC CIP; Dragos Security, where he helped create CyberLens for OT asset discovery; and CYBATI, a cyber-physical security training company later acquired by IntelliGenesis. He also worked as an information security engineer and architect at Argonne National Laboratory. As a longtime SANS Institute certified instructor and current Lead Research Scientist for Education Translation at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Information Trust Institute, he has trained more than 9,000 professionals across government, utilities and industry.

The conversation will explore:

  • Secure organisational adoption of AI
  • AI governance and cybersecurity strategy
  • Operational technology, industrial networking and IIoT security
  • Cybersecurity for control systems and critical infrastructure
  • What “human in the loop” means when the loop itself is learning
  • The personal and professional questions people bring to AI systems
