About this event

What to expect

Build a fully functional AI travel planning agent from scratch in this intensive, hands-on workshop at Cambridge's premier tech hub. Over six progressive challenges, you'll learn to combine tool-calling, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and streaming UIs using the Vercel AI SDK — no prior AI or machine learning experience required.

What You'll Build

By the end of this workshop, you'll have created a working travel agent that searches a destination database, makes intelligent decisions using external tools, and streams responses into a real-time chat interface. Each challenge builds on the previous one, letting you work at your own pace while learning fundamental concepts about how AI agents actually work: from prompts and models to tool execution and decision loops.

Workshop Structure

The evening begins at 6:30pm with pizza and drinks while you verify your local setup. After a brief intro at 7:00pm, you'll dive into six hands-on coding challenges (approximately 10-15 minutes each) that progressively teach you:

  • How AI agents process prompts, select tools, and make decisions
  • Building tool-calling agents with the Vercel AI SDK
  • Grounding agents in your own data using RAG techniques
  • Streaming AI-generated responses into chat UIs in real time

Collaboration is actively encouraged throughout the challenges. The workshop wraps up at 8:20pm with demos, Q&A, and time to discuss what you've built.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for anyone curious about AI agents who wants practical, hands-on experience. You'll need basic JavaScript knowledge and command-line familiarity, but no web development, AI, or ML background is required — the UI is pre-built and we start from absolute fundamentals. Whether you're a backend developer, product manager, or technical founder exploring AI capabilities, you'll leave with working code and real understanding.

What to Bring

Come prepared with a laptop running Node.js 22+ (verify with node --version), your preferred code editor, and Ollama installed locally. Pre-download the workshop repository and run npm install before arriving to save setup time. Full instructions are provided in the repo.
