About this event

What to expect

If you've ever wondered where the technical standards underpinning AI, data governance, and modern software development actually come from, this Brighton Data Forum event offers a rare behind-the-scenes look. Taking place at PLATF9RM Brighton's Tower Point offices on May 27th, this session brings together two leading voices in technical standardisation to demystify the often-invisible frameworks that shape the technologies we use daily.

What You'll Learn

Guy Davidson and Sinead Fitzgerald will explore how standards are created, why they matter in practice, and how you can get involved if you're curious about shaping the future of AI and data governance. Their talk, "Standardising AI and the concepts that support it", covers the hidden standards behind everything from C++ programming to AI governance frameworks—technologies that form the backbone of modern software development but rarely get discussed outside committee rooms.

Guy serves as Convenor of the ISO C++ programming language and BSI Chair of Programming Languages. As author of Beautiful C++ and former Head of Engineering Practice at Creative Assembly (where he worked on the Total War franchise), he brings deep practical experience from both industry and international standards bodies. Sinead is Principal Data Architect at Paxton Access and serves on technical committees at BSI, CEN/CENELEC and ISO/IEC, focusing on AI and data governance. With 30+ years across software engineering, data management and architecture, she leads data strategy, standards, and organisational change initiatives.

Who Should Attend

This event is ideal for data professionals, software engineers, architects, and anyone working with AI systems who wants to understand how technical standards influence their daily work. Whether you're concerned about data governance, curious about how programming languages evolve, or simply interested in the intersection of policy and practice in tech, you'll gain valuable insights into processes that shape the industry.
