What to expect

A rooftop podcast taping in Barcelona exploring how AI, migration and investment are reshaping the city, and who benefits.

On Thursday 17 September 2026, HCD Barcelona will record the first live episode of its new artificial intelligence series at One Parc Central. Taking place at sunset in front of a small audience, this English-language event offers a rare chance to watch a timely, city-focused conversation unfold in real time rather than listening after publication.

AI, power and urban change

Guest Stephany Oliveros is the founder of Lyra AI, a Barcelona-built platform that uses artificial intelligence to help close the gender gap at work. Her central argument is that the algorithms influencing more areas of life are not neutral: their rules are written by people, serve particular interests and often remain hidden from those affected by them.

Journalist Daria Gavrilova will host the discussion. Having covered Barcelona from the inside for more than a decade after moving to the city from abroad, Gavrilova brings both professional reporting experience and a migrant’s perspective. Her HCD Barcelona podcast examines the forces changing the city, including AI, the economy and housing, immigration, and Catalan identity.

The conversation will tackle questions that conventional technology events can overlook:

  • Who does Barcelona’s AI boom attract, and who might it price out?
  • Who is recognised as local talent, and who remains invisible?
  • How do algorithms distribute influence and opportunity?
  • What could Barcelona gain or lose as AI, migration and money transform it over the next five years?

The backdrop is a city described by the organiser as third in the world for foreign investment in AI, behind London and Singapore, where a third of residents were born abroad. That combination makes Barcelona a compelling setting for examining technology not simply as a product, but as a force shaping work, identity, housing and belonging.
