About this event

What to expect

Join Black Boys Code Canada for an immersive, bilingual workshop designed specifically for boys aged 8-17 in Montreal. This free, hands-on session takes place at Concordia University and introduces participants to user-centered design principles — a critical shift from simply building functional technology to creating experiences that resonate with real people.

What Makes This Workshop Unique

Delivered in both French and English, this workshop moves beyond basic AI project building into one of the most exciting stages of innovation: designing meaningful, intuitive, and engaging digital experiences. Students learn that the best products succeed not just because they work, but because they connect with users on an emotional and practical level. The curriculum challenges participants to ask not "Does it work?" but "Does it feel right for the user?"

Two Learning Tracks

Beginner Track: AI Interactive Storytelling with Scratch

This culminating beginner project introduces students to emotion-responsive storytelling. Participants design and build interactive narratives that adapt in real time based on a viewer's facial expressions — a smile might trigger a joyful adventure, while a sad expression could unlock a comforting storyline. Students begin with intentional design work, planning characters, settings, and branching story paths before bringing their visions to life through code. Key activities include exploring interactive versus traditional storytelling, building three emotion-based story paths, coding emotion-triggered transitions, and preparing projects for showcase.

Advanced Track: Python Chatbot Refinement & User Experience

Students who have already built functional chatbots step into the role of product designers and engineers. This track focuses on transforming working chatbots into polished, user-friendly systems through code refinement, error handling implementation, and enhanced user experience design. Participants add personality features like emojis and dynamic responses, build memory capabilities, conduct peer testing sessions, and iterate based on real feedback — mirroring how professional developers improve products in the real world.

Learning Outcomes

Beginner track participants will master branching logic, create dynamic narratives, think like designers, and learn to connect technology with human emotion. Advanced track students will write cleaner code with proper documen
