Try AI Apps

Newcastle · Bewick Hall, Level 2, Newcastle City Library

Hosted by Newcastle Libraries

Try practical AI apps in a safe, supported setting at Newcastle City Library on 22 October 2026. This free drop-in session runs from 11am to 4pm. Explore what everyday AI can, and cannot, do AI is often presented as either intimidating or capable of solving everything. Try AI Apps offers a more grounded introduction: the chance to experiment with useful tools, ask questions and understand their real-world capabilities and limitations. Organised by Newcastle Libraries as part of Get Online Week, the session focuses on accessible, practical applications of AI rather than technical theory. Visitors can try apps including: - Google Lens, which can identify objects and translate text - Seeing AI, designed to help people with visual impairments interpret and navigate their surroundings - Be My Eyes, another tool intended to support people with visual impairments Guidance will be available throughout the event, helping you explore these apps in a safe and supported environment. Crucially, the session will also explain what the technology cannot do, giving you a more realistic understanding of when AI tools may, or may not, be useful. Who is it for? This event is well suited to anyone who is curious about AI but would prefer to explore it with support rather than alone. It may be particularly valuable for people interested in digital accessibility, object recognition, translation or tools that support people with visual impairments. The emphasis is on trying the apps for yourself, so you do not need to attend a formal presentation or commit to the full five-hour programme. The relaxed, in-person drop-in format makes this an approachable way to build confidence with AI-powered mobile apps, whether you are encountering them for the first time or want to better understand tools you have already heard about. Venue and format The session takes place from 11am to 4pm on Thursday 22 October 2026 at Bewick Hall, Level 2, Newcastle City Library, 33 New Bridge Street West, Newcastle, NE1 8AX. Attendance is free, and the organiser states that there is no need to book. Simply drop in during the event window to explore the apps and receive guidance.
