Vercel Adds Browserbase Search and Fetch to AI Gateway

Browserbase Search and Fetch now runs through Vercel AI Gateway, giving tool-calling models a way to search the current web and retrieve page contents. Builders can use both tools with one AI Gateway API key instead of tying the web layer to one model provider.

The 30 September changelog says the tools work with any model that supports tool calling. They also stay in place when a developer switches models, so the search and retrieval setup does not have to change alongside the model.

Browserbase Search and Fetch splits discovery from retrieval

The integration provides two separate helpers. Search finds relevant pages using current web information. Fetch retrieves the contents of a selected page so the model can work with them.

ToolWhat it does
SearchFinds relevant pages and current information on the web
FetchRetrieves the contents of a web page

Both are available alongside Browserbase’s existing AI SDK and Vercel Marketplace integrations. AI Gateway handles access across model providers through the same API key, while the chosen model must support tool calling.

How to add the tools

Browserbase Search and Fetch requires AI SDK 7.0.116 or later. Developers update the SDK with pnpm add ai@latest, set an AI_GATEWAY_API_KEY, then pass the Browserbase helpers through the tools parameter of streamText.

  1. 1

    Update AI SDK

install version 7.0.116 or later with `pnpm add ai@latest`

  2. 2

    Set the API key

add `AI_GATEWAY_API_KEY` to the project environment

  3. 3

    Add the helpers

pass Browserbase Search and Fetch in the `tools` parameter

  4. 4

    Run the model

use any model available through AI Gateway that supports tool calling

The model can then decide when to search for relevant pages and when to retrieve their contents. Changing the model does not require replacing or reconnecting those Browserbase tools.
