Donut, the parent company of Gatheround, has rolled out a suite of June updates aimed at reducing manual work for People teams while strengthening team connection through Slack.
The company announced on LinkedIn three major feature releases: Shoutouts for peer recognition, Milestone Points for automated birthday and anniversary rewards, and Team Pulse for tracking channel engagement.
Shoutouts Now Free for All Teams
Donut has expanded its Shoutouts feature, previously available only on higher tiers, to Free and Standard plans. The peer recognition tool allows team members to publicly acknowledge colleagues' contributions directly in Slack channels. Teams can customize recognition categories and create a culture of appreciation without requiring administrator intervention.
The move to make Shoutouts widely available reflects a broader trend among workplace tools to democratize features that drive engagement. By removing the paywall, Donut is betting that recognition mechanics will drive adoption and create stickiness even at the free tier.
Milestone Points Automate Employee Recognition
Milestone Points automatically detect and celebrate birthdays and work anniversaries when teams connect their HRIS system to Donut. The feature awards points that employees can redeem for meaningful rewards, removing the manual tracking burden from HR teams.
The HRIS integration requirement means the feature targets organizations already using human resources information systems, a segment that tends to value automation and consistency in employee experience programs. Teams using platforms like BambooHR or Rippling can pipe data directly into Donut for automatic milestone detection.
Points redemption gives employees agency in choosing their own rewards rather than receiving generic company swag or gift cards. The system likely competes with dedicated recognition platforms like Bonusly or Nectar, but benefits from native Slack integration where many teams already spend their workday.
Team Pulse Adds Sentiment Tracking
Team Pulse, currently in beta, provides an instant view of participation and sentiment across Donut-managed channels. The dashboard tracks which team members are engaging with activities, responding to prompts, and participating in connection initiatives.
For People teams running programs like coffee chats, virtual social hours, or onboarding cohorts, Team Pulse surfaces engagement patterns that might otherwise require manual spreadsheet tracking. Managers can identify who might be falling through the cracks or which program formats generate the strongest participation.
The sentiment analysis component likely uses natural language processing to gauge tone and engagement quality beyond simple participation metrics. This follows Donut's recent emphasis on AI-powered People operations, where the company has been building tools that surface insights rather than just facilitate connection.
Donut acquired Gatheround in December 2024, bringing the virtual event platform's meeting design capabilities under the same roof as its Slack-native connection tools. The June updates focus on the core Donut for Slack product rather than Gatheround's video platform, though the combined company has been integrating features across both products.
The updates arrive as distributed teams continue refining their remote culture strategies. Rather than forcing connection through mandatory video calls or elaborate virtual events, tools like Donut are betting on ambient, asynchronous recognition and automated celebration as lighter-weight ways to maintain team cohesion. For small teams on tight budgets, free peer recognition and automated milestone tracking remove two common pain points that typically require either dedicated software subscriptions or significant administrative overhead.
