Descript Lets You Fix Misspoken Words by Typing Over Them

Editing Words You Never Said

Descript has introduced a feature that lets video creators fix misspoken words without returning to the studio. The text-based video editor now allows users to highlight a word in the transcript and type a replacement, generating audio that matches the speaker's voice and syncing it with the video.

The update addresses one of the most time-consuming problems in video production: the need to re-record entire segments when a single word is wrong. Instead of scheduling another session or splicing together multiple takes, creators can now make surgical edits directly in the transcript interface.

How Word Replacement Works

The feature builds on Descript's existing text-based editing model, where video is represented as a transcript. When a creator highlights a word and types a new one, Descript's AI generates replacement audio using the speaker's voice characteristics from the existing recording. The tool automatically syncs the new audio with the video timeline and adjusts mouth movements to match the corrected word.

This approach removes several steps from the traditional editing workflow:

  • No need to book studio time for pickup shots
  • No manual audio splicing or crossfades
  • No visual discontinuity from cutting between takes

The feature works within Descript's standard editor interface, treating the transcript as the primary editing surface. Creators who notice an error during review can fix it immediately without leaving the project.

Context Within Descript's Editing Suite

The word replacement capability extends Descript's existing suite of text-based video tools, including its automatic transcription engine, filler word removal, and Studio Sound audio enhancement. The company has built its product around the premise that editing video through a transcript is faster than working with traditional timeline-based editors.

Descript recently shipped Seedance 2.0 with enhanced AI motion graphics and rolled out nine new transitions to speed up common editing tasks. The word replacement feature represents another step toward removing technical barriers between creators and finished video.

The tool is available now to all Descript users. Pricing remains unchanged, with the feature included in existing subscription tiers that support AI voice generation and overdub capabilities.
