Descript Adds Claude Opus 4.8 to Underlord for More Deliberate AI Edits

Descript has added Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 to its Underlord AI editing assistant, giving users a more deliberate model option for editing-heavy tasks. The update positions Opus 4.8 as an alternative to the existing Opus 4.7, which remains the default for most workflows.

According to the company's announcement on LinkedIn, Opus 4.8 performed better in internal evaluations on tasks that require more editorial precision: removing filler words, cutting retakes, tightening pauses, generating chapters, and applying Studio Sound audio enhancements. The model is available through Underlord's model picker and is not replacing Opus 4.7, which Descript says is still faster and lower cost in its tests.

The addition comes as Descript continues to refine Underlord, its AI editing assistant that handles common post-production tasks through natural language prompts. Underlord already supports multiple models, and the new option gives editors a way to trade speed for quality when the content demands it.

Why Opus 4.8 Matters for Editors

Most AI editing workflows don't begin with a perfect prompt. They start with rough recordings, false starts, and sections that almost work but need refinement. Opus 4.8 is designed for those moments when the first pass isn't enough and a more thoughtful model might deliver a cleaner result.

Descript's internal evaluations highlighted specific areas where Opus 4.8 outperformed Opus 4.7:

  • Filler word removal: More accurate identification and removal of "um," "uh," and other verbal pauses without disrupting speech flow.
  • Retake handling: Better judgment on which takes to keep when multiple versions exist.
  • Pause adjustment: More natural timing decisions when tightening or adding pauses.
  • Chapter generation: Improved segmentation and titling based on content structure.
  • Studio Sound application: More consistent audio enhancement across uneven source material.

The tradeoff is processing time and cost. Opus 4.7 remains the faster, more economical option for straightforward edits or projects where speed matters more than marginal quality gains. Users can switch between models depending on the project's needs.

Underlord's Growing Model Library

Descript has steadily expanded Underlord's capabilities since its launch. Earlier this year, the company added Google Gemini 3.5 Flash as another model option, and recent updates introduced chat history, context pinning, and improved edit review. The model picker now includes multiple options from both Anthropic and Google, letting editors choose the right tool for the job rather than defaulting to a single model for all tasks.

The Opus 4.8 integration follows a broader pattern in AI-powered editing tools: offering multiple models instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. Tools like Cursor and Claude have taken similar paths, recognizing that different tasks benefit from different models. For video and podcast editors, the choice often comes down to whether a project needs quick cleanup or more deliberate polish.

Practical Use Cases

Opus 4.8 is most useful in projects where editorial judgment matters more than speed. A podcast episode with multiple speakers, overlapping dialogue, and uneven audio quality might benefit from the model's more careful approach. Similarly, a video with multiple takes of the same section, where subtle performance differences matter, could see better results with Opus 4.8 than with a faster model that might miss nuances.

For routine work like removing basic filler words from a single-speaker interview or generating a quick rough cut, Opus 4.7 will still handle the job faster and cheaper. The new model is available now to all Descript users through the Underlord model picker. Users can switch models mid-project if they want to compare results.

Descript has not disclosed pricing differences between the two models or whether token costs vary. The company continues to bundle Underlord access with its existing subscription tiers, which start at $12 per month for the Creator plan.
