What to expect

This hands-on workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to the R programming language for statistical computing, perfect for anyone looking to start their journey in data analysis and quantitative research. Led by Anthony Damico, an independent consultant with extensive experience in R programming, this three-hour in-person session combines practical coding exercises with powerpoint-free discussion of open source statistical computing.

What You'll Learn

The workshop equips attendees with a broad and unintimidating overview of how to approach quantitative research tasks across diverse domains including data science, geospatial analysis, graphical visualization, epidemiology and clinical trials, econometrics and actuarial science, database engineering, experiment design, natural language processing, and medical imaging. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some programming experience, you'll gain practical skills in R programming and scripting through guided coding examples.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • Hands-on introduction to R programming with live coding and scripting exercises
  • Understanding the open source community behind R, with comparisons to alternatives like Python, C++, JavaScript, Stata, HTML, and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with the CRAN package ecosystem, including powerful tools like data.table, the tidyverse, and the superfast SQL engine duckdb

Workshop Format

The session runs from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM with a structured agenda:

  • 2:00-2:45 PM: Discussion of statistical computing with R — what free and open source software really means, who created the R project, who uses it, and why
  • 2:45-3:30 PM: Hands-on session covering how R users interact with the development environment, save work, share methods, and publish results
  • 3:30 PM: Break for snacks
  • 3:30-5:00 PM: Continued hands-on practice and Q&A

Who Should Attend

This workshop welcomes beginners with no prior programming experience. If you're interested in data analysis, statistical computing, or building skills for research in any quantitative field, this is an ideal starting point. The powerpoint-free format ensures maximum engagement with real code and practical examples.

Important: Bring your laptop! This is a hands-on coding workshop where you'll be working directly w
