What to expect

Experience a unique blend of documentary filmmaking and AI ethics at this free screening of "Deepfaking Sam Altman" at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington. This Stories That Matter™ event offers a rare opportunity to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence, creativity, and human connection through an engaging comedy documentary that tackles one of today's most pressing technological questions.

About the Film

Director Adam Bhala Lough, a working Los Angeles filmmaker and father of two, represents the anxious everyman of the AI age in this verité documentary with a sci-fi comedy twist. After failing to secure an interview with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, Lough takes an unconventional approach — he travels across the world to collaborate with an Indian deepfake artist to create "Sam Bot," an AI trained on Altman's voice and public appearances. What begins as a creative workaround evolves into a thought-provoking exploration of AI's unintended consequences and the ethical minefield that emerges when technology meets human creativity.

The documentary captures the moment when AI threatens to upend creative professions, children's futures, and potentially humanity itself, all while maintaining a lighthearted, surprisingly moving tone that makes complex technological questions accessible to everyone.

Panel Discussion & Q&A

Following the 6:30 PM screening, join an exceptional panel discussion moderated by Sig Libowitz, director of the Johns Hopkins Graduate Film and Media Program:

  • Adam Bhala Lough — Emmy-nominated director of the film
  • Luke Kelly-Clyne — Emmy-winning producer, Johns Hopkins alumnus, and head of studio for Kevin Hart's Hartbeat production company
  • Noel King — Co-host and editorial director of Vox's Today, Explained, former host of NPR's Morning Edition and Up First podcast

This distinguished panel will explore the creative, ethical, and legal implications of AI-generated content, deepfake technology, and the future of human creativity in an AI-dominated landscape.
