What to expect

Learn how grants, debt and equity can fund your startup in this practical online fundraising session on 8 September 2026, hosted by Novabook.

If you are thinking about raising investment but are unsure where to begin, this one-hour session will give you a clearer view of the available funding routes and what it takes to become investment-ready. Running 10:00–11:00 UTC via Zoom, it is designed to help founders make more informed decisions before approaching investors or starting a funding round.

What the session covers

Sam Simpson, co-founder of FounderCatalyst, will provide a practical guide to the startup fundraising landscape. He will compare the implications of grants, debt and equity, then examine the main equity routes available to early-stage businesses.

Topics and takeaways include:

  • The differences between grants, debt and equity
  • Equity funding through angel investment, venture capital and crowdfunding
  • The stages of the equity fundraising journey
  • The key documents required during a funding round
  • The five main things an angel investor will ask to see
  • How angels assess opportunities and select investments

The session is relevant both to founders preparing to raise soon and to people in the startup ecosystem who want a stronger working knowledge of investment. It focuses on practical fundraising preparation rather than assuming attendees already understand funding structures or investor expectations.

About the speaker

Sam Simpson is an entrepreneur, active angel investor and board adviser. Through FounderCatalyst, he works to make the legal journey behind early-stage investment more transparent and affordable. He also brings first-hand fundraising and operating experience, having co-founded and exited several technology startups. One of those businesses was ranked the 17th fastest-growing company in Europe in 2017 after growing from £0 to £30 million in revenue in under four years.

As an angel investor, Sam has completed 35 investments over eight years, giving attendees insight from both sides of the fundraising table: the founder seeking capital and the investor evaluating an opportunity.
