About this event

What to expect

PyData Southampton brings together data scientists, Python developers, and machine learning enthusiasts for their 24th meetup at Carnival House in Southampton. This event offers an evening of technical talks, lightning presentations, and networking opportunities for anyone working with Python and data analytics.

Main Talks

The evening kicks off with "Can we abandon Pareto Fronts? A new compass for optimisation" presented by Andrew Morgan. This talk promises to challenge conventional approaches to multi-objective optimisation problems, exploring new methodologies that could reshape how data scientists approach complex optimisation challenges.

A second main talk is scheduled but yet to be announced — previous PyData Southampton events have covered topics ranging from neural networks and natural language processing to production ML systems and data engineering pipelines.

Lightning Talks

The lightning talk segment features "Red ball lottery: the 2 urn problem" by Adam Hill, examining probability theory through an engaging lottery scenario. Additional lightning talks provide opportunities for quick knowledge sharing and introduce attendees to diverse topics across the Python data ecosystem.

What to Expect

This meetup welcomes practitioners at all levels — from those just starting their journey with Python data tools to experienced data scientists and machine learning engineers. The relaxed atmosphere encourages questions, discussion, and knowledge exchange. Carnival UK generously provides pizza and refreshments throughout the evening.

The event follows the NumFOCUS Code of Conduct, ensuring an inclusive and respectful environment for all participants.

Logistics

Doors open at 6:30 PM with talks beginning promptly at 7:00 PM. The formal programme concludes around 9:00 PM, with optional pub networking for those wanting to continue discussions. Important: Valid photo ID is required by building security, and your Meetup profile must display your full name to appear on the guest list.

PyData Southampton is part of the global PyData network, supported by NumFOCUS, Carnival UK, and JetBrains, who provide IDE subscription prizes for attendees. The community maintains an active presence on Bluesky, Instagram, Threads (@pydatasoton), and LinkedIn.
