What to expect

Explore how conversational AI changes trust, intimacy and responsibility at this expert panel in Singapore on 13 August 2026.

As people increasingly use AI to brainstorm, learn, seek advice or simply find someone to talk to, the relationship between user and system can become emotionally meaningful. This edition of Off-Script, presented by Lorong AI, examines what that shift means for the people designing, evaluating and governing conversational AI.

What the panel will explore

Rather than reducing relational AI to a debate about whether it is good or bad, the discussion will consider its opportunities, risks and practical design challenges. Questions include:

  • What responsibilities do developers have when users form emotional connections with AI?
  • How should builders approach memory, consent, trust and emotional safety?
  • How can systems better protect vulnerable users?
  • Are current AI evaluation methods sufficient when the quality of the relationship matters as much as the response?
  • How should cultural and social contexts shape alignment and governance?

The panel brings together research, product-building, psychology, behavioural science and governance perspectives:

  • Mabel Loh, founder of Maibel, builds emotionally intelligent wellness companions for women. Her work covers relational AI safety, behavioural evaluation, memory and user trust, informed by serving users across Southeast Asia.
  • Hakim Norhashim, Research Associate at the NUS AI Institute, studies AI governance, value alignment and how large language models engage with local cultural contexts.
  • Dr Gerard Yeo, Research Scientist at A*STAR’s Centre for Advanced Technologies in Online Safety, investigates how AI reasons about beliefs, emotions and social interactions, and how those capabilities affect human trust.

The conversation will be moderated by Dr Kenny Choo, Assistant Professor at SUTD and director of the Context-Aware Interaction Lab. His research focuses on how people trust AI, rely on it and negotiate decision-making authority with AI systems.
