About this event

What to expect

Research software often forms the backbone of scientific discovery, yet many developers don't realize their code can be published as a formal peer-reviewed paper. If you're writing software as part of your research at the University of Sheffield—whether for complex modeling, experiments, or scientific instruments—this Lunch Byte seminar introduces you to the Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS), a leading academic journal that has published over 2,400 software papers since 2016 across diverse scientific fields.

This 1-hour session brings together three expert speakers to demystify the JOSS publication process. You'll hear from Romain Thomas (Head of Research Software Engineering at Sheffield), Arfon Smith (JOSS Editor-in-Chief), and Edwin Brown (Senior Research Software Engineer). Together, they'll walk you through every stage—from preparing your software and manuscript, navigating peer review, to final publication. Crucially, you'll gain insights from both the submitter and reviewer perspectives, helping you understand what makes a strong JOSS submission.

Why Publish Your Research Software?

Publishing software in JOSS provides formal academic recognition for work that might otherwise go uncited. It increases your software's visibility and impact, making it easier for other researchers to discover, cite, and build upon your contributions. JOSS papers are peer-reviewed, ensuring quality and credibility while promoting open, reproducible research practices.

Event Details

The seminar takes place at The Diamond - Workroom 2 on campus, with catering provided for up to 45 in-person attendees. An online attendance link will also be available for those who cannot attend physically. No prerequisite skills are required—this session is accessible to any researcher or research student who writes code, regardless of programming language or domain.

Important: This event is restricted to University of Sheffield researchers and research students. Please only register for in-person attendance if you plan to come, as free training has real costs and no-shows reduce capacity for future opportunities. The session may be recorded and shared via the University of Sheffield Kaltura platform.
