About this event

What to expect

Join the Nottingham Data Science and AI community for an essential deep dive into data quality investigation with Professor Roy Ruddle from the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA). This practical evening session tackles one of data science's biggest challenges: the fact that data preparation typically consumes more than half of any project's time, and there are over 100 ways data quality can fail.

What You'll Learn

Prof. Ruddle will demonstrate a rigorous yet efficient approach to investigating data quality, walking through an openly available six-step workflow and associated Python package (vizdataquality). You'll discover practical methods for identifying and addressing data quality issues that commonly derail data science projects. This is particularly valuable for anyone who has struggled with messy datasets or wants to streamline their data preparation processes.

About the Speaker

Prof. Roy Ruddle serves as Professor of Computing and LIDA's Director of Research Technology, bringing extensive experience from both industry and academia. His expertise in data visualization and data quality has produced significant real-world impact, including the Leeds Virtual Microscope (commercialized by healthcare giant Roche), the spin-out company Petriva, and multiple open-source Python packages. His work bridges theoretical rigor with practical application.

Event Format

The evening begins at 6:00 PM with doors opening, followed by the main presentation at 6:15 PM. After the talk concludes around 8:30 PM, there's ample opportunity for networking and discussion with fellow data practitioners. Pizza is provided courtesy of sponsor Rebel Recruiters (bring your own drinks), creating a relaxed atmosphere for exchanging ideas and making connections within Nottingham's thriving data science community.

Who Should Attend

This meetup is ideal for data scientists, analysts, machine learning engineers, and anyone working with data who wants to improve their data quality processes. Whether you're early in your career or an experienced practitioner, you'll gain actionable techniques for a challenge every data professional faces. The session is also valuable for technical leaders looking to optimize their teams' data preparation workflows.

The event takes place at the Newton Building on Nottingham Trent University's City Campus, with photos taken during the ev
