What to expect

Explore the critical challenges of deploying responsible AI systems at the edge in this thought-provoking online talk by Professor Dhaval Thakker from the University of Hull. As AI moves beyond centralised cloud infrastructure into homes, hospitals, factories, and cities, new questions emerge around fairness, explainability, and assurance in distributed environments.

What You'll Learn

This session examines the emerging landscape of Edge AI through the lens of responsible AI principles. Professor Thakker will address what happens when AI decision-making must remain trustworthy whilst operating across heterogeneous devices with distributed data and models. Drawing from applied research and real-world deployments, the talk covers:

  • Fairness challenges when AI systems operate in decentralised environments
  • Explainability requirements for edge-deployed models making real-time decisions
  • Assurance mechanisms for trustworthy AI in resource-constrained edge devices
  • Practical lessons from implementations across healthcare, social care, defence, and critical infrastructure
  • Open research questions shaping the future of responsible edge AI
  • Pathways towards maintaining AI trustworthiness in highly decentralised systems

About the Speaker

Professor Dhaval Thakker leads the Centre for Responsible AI at the University of Hull, where he serves as Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. His research bridges responsible and explainable AI, edge computing, and human-centred systems. He coordinates Hull's engagement with the EPSRC-funded National Edge AI Hub, leading pilots on hybrid federated learning and dependable AI at the edge. With experience directing multi-partner innovation projects exceeding £15M, his work spans international collaborations across Asia, North America, Europe, and the Middle East.

Who Should Attend

This talk is ideal for AI practitioners, IoT developers, researchers, and technologists interested in responsible AI deployment. Whether you're working on edge computing systems, developing AI applications for distributed environments, or exploring the ethical implications of decentralised intelligence, you'll gain valuable insights into the practical and theoretical challenges of responsible edge AI.

Hosted by AIoT Hub (formerly IoT North) Newcastle, this virtual event offers an accessible opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research shaping the fut
