What to expect

Learn how to replace Kubernetes Ingress with Gateway API through a practical, zero-downtime migration pattern demonstrated with Kong Operator and ingress2gateway.

Kubernetes SIG Network retired Ingress NGINX in spring 2026, with best-effort maintenance ending in March. The project is now archived and will receive no further releases, bug fixes or security patches. For platform teams still running it, migration is therefore an immediate operational concern rather than a future planning exercise.

Taking place online on 17 September 2026 at 22:00, this one-hour technical meetup from Kong/HANOI explains how platform engineers and SREs can move from the stable but feature-frozen Ingress API to Kubernetes Gateway API. The session uses Kong Operator as its reference implementation and focuses on a migration approach that teams can begin applying to their own clusters.

What the session covers

  • Gateway API’s role-based model: Understand how GatewayClass, Gateway and HTTPRoute divide responsibilities between platform and application teams, and why this approach can go beyond the limitations of Ingress annotations.
  • A phased, zero-downtime cutover: See how existing rules can be converted with Kong’s open-source ingress2gateway tool, then run Ingress and Gateway API side by side while the new configuration is validated.
  • Day-two operations with Kong Operator: Explore automation for certificate rotation, latency-based autoscaling, zero-downtime upgrades and ongoing operations after standardising on Gateway API.

Live migration demonstration

The centrepiece is a live demo converting a production-style Ingress resource with ingress2gateway. Rather than presenting migration as a single high-risk switch, the walkthrough shows how old and new routing resources can operate in parallel until the team is confident enough to complete the cutover.…
