About this event

What to expect

Master data engineering’s open lakehouse and streaming stack at this online meetup on Saturday 31 October 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00.

Hosted by the Data Science and Engineering Club, the morning combines technical talks with project sharing and networking. The event is suited to data engineers, architects, developers and data practitioners interested in open-source infrastructure, semantic layers and real-world streaming systems. The event page does not specify a timezone.

Agenda

  • 10:00–10:10, DSEclub introduction
  • 10:10–10:50, From Open Storage to Open Meaning with Will Martin, Data & AI Evangelist at Dremio. Learn how Apache Iceberg and Apache Polaris support an open, vendor-neutral lakehouse, and how Apache Ossie (Incubating) aims to make business concepts such as “revenue” and “active customer” portable across notebooks, BI tools and query engines. The talk also explores shared semantics in the age of agentic analytics.
  • 11:00–11:30, Data Streaming at Home with Georgi Samardzhiev. This practical account examines a homelab Kappa platform built with Apache Kafka, Apache Iceberg, Bytewax, k3s and self-hosted S3, and the integration failures that made it a valuable learning system.
  • 11:30–12:00, Projects and networking

Will brings more than 15 years of experience across data engineering, software development and solutions architecture, including work with CERN, Deloitte and Tamr. Attendees can also speak with organiser Roman Golovnya about presenting or hosting a future meetup.
