EPSRC Programme Grant Digital Navigation for Chemical Space
About this event

What to expect

Explore how fast-moving AI advances from computer science can unlock new approaches to chemistry and materials discovery at this Liverpool symposium.

Taking place on Tuesday 8 September 2026, from 9:30am to 4:30pm, this one-day, in-person event brings computer science, chemistry and materials science into the same room. AIchemy Hub UK and the EPSRC Programme Grant Digital Navigation for Chemical Space are convening the symposium to examine how emerging artificial intelligence capabilities can be transferred into chemical and materials research.

Why attend?

Many of today’s most significant AI developments originate in computer science, but their potential applications extend far beyond that field. This symposium creates space to look beyond established uses of AI in chemistry and ask how newer methods might be adapted to accelerate materials discovery, navigate chemical space and support future scientific innovation.

The programme will focus on:

  • The latest advances in artificial intelligence relevant to scientific research
  • Opportunities to translate computer science innovations into chemistry and materials discovery
  • Ways emerging AI capabilities could be adapted for chemical and materials applications
  • Interdisciplinary exchange between computer scientists, chemists and materials scientists
  • New connections and potential collaborations across traditionally separate research areas

Rather than treating AI as a discipline-specific tool, the event emphasises transferability: identifying capabilities developed elsewhere and considering how they could open up new research directions. That cross-disciplinary perspective is the symposium’s defining feature.

Who is it for?

The event is geared towards researchers, experts and technical practitioners working across computer science, chemistry, materials science and adjacent AI-enabled research. It will be particularly relevant to people who want to understand developments outside their own discipline, test the relevance of emerging computational methods and meet potential collaborators. The event page does not specify prerequisites or a required experience level, but the scientific and interdisciplinary focus suggests a research-oriented audience.
