About this event

What to expect

This interdisciplinary Open Lab brings together researchers from environmental science, AI ethics, creative industries, and social sciences to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and climate action in creative sectors. Hosted jointly by the Institute of Environmental Futures and the Institute of Digital Culture at the University of Leicester, this full-day session runs from 10am to 4pm and offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of Climate AI research.

What You'll Explore

The event addresses critical questions about how AI technologies in creative industries impact environmental sustainability. Through dynamic working sessions, brainstorming workshops, and interdisciplinary discussions, participants will examine the environmental costs of AI deployment in creative work, investigate policy mechanisms for responsible AI use, and explore funding models for Climate AI art projects.

Session Objectives

This Open Lab has two primary goals: establishing a cross-disciplinary research group to theorize and analyze Climate AI applications while showcasing diverse research methodologies from participating fields, and developing a Call for Papers for an international two-day conference. The planned conference will investigate policies developed with policymakers and practitioners to ensure AI use considers environmental costs and sociopolitical impacts, examine funding structures for Climate AI art, and feature exhibitions of Climate AI artworks.
