What to expect

Key value prop: a hands-on, content-rich in-person meetup that blends software architecture decision-making with AI-driven evolution concepts, offering practical strategies you can apply in real projects.

What to expect:

  • An evening in Leeuwarden (Proeflokaal Wouters, Sophialaan 5) on Tuesday, 24 March 2026. Venue doors open at 16:30; first talk starts at 17:00 and the session runs through 20:00 CET. Register before March 20th to secure a spot.
  • Two deep-dive talks centered on architecture, strategy, and the influence of AI on software development:
    • Making significant software architecture decisions by Bert Jan Schrijver. Learn how to balance technical trade-offs with organizational, financial, and long-term considerations. The talk covers evaluation criteria beyond tech-fit, ensuring decisions stay aligned with team capabilities, maintainability, and future hiring needs.
    • Four Billion Years of Vibe Coding - Evolution, Architecture and the Influence of AI by Martijn van Iersel. A biology-informed look at how evolving codebases mirror natural evolution. Explore concepts like fitness functions, evolvability, and how AI-assisted coding (LLMs, etc.) can shape or accelerate architectural evolution.
  • Speaker bios provide context: Bert Jan Schrijver (CTO at OpenValue, Java expert, DevOps focus) and Martijn van Iersel (technical product owner at TOPdesk, educator in programming through games and biology-inspired approaches).
  • A practical, discussion-oriented format with opportunities for Q&A, plus food and drinks between talks to facilitate networking among attendees (developers, architects, IT leads, vibe-coders).

Who should attend: software engineers, architects, technical leads and hobbyists curious about pragmatic architecture decisions in an AI-enabled landscape, especially those interested in the “vibe coding” concept and how evolution-style thinking can inform modern software design. The talks balance theoretical framing with actionable guidance you can apply to real-world projects.

Format and experience: in-person, two talks with a live audience Q&A, followed by networking and informal discussion. Expect accessible explanations of complex trade-offs and concrete takeaways for architectures that scale and adapt.

Registration: The event is hosted by JUG Noord. You can register on the Meetup page and look out for venue details and timing. This event ties AI concepts to practical software architecture, offering a unique blend of technical depth a
