What to expect

Build an AI-generated app, then learn how to make it safe to ship at this hands-on hackathon in Leeds on 25 September 2026.

Hosted by Yorkshire Software Solutions as part of Leeds Digital Festival, Get that Vibe Hackathon explores the crucial gap between creating an app quickly with AI and preparing it for real users. Across one intensive day, you’ll experience prompt-based AI coding, review another team’s work and uncover the security, scalability and reliability issues that generated code can leave behind.

Build it, swap it, make it safe

This is an eight-hour, in-person hackathon running from 9am to 5pm at The Knowledge Exchange, The Rose Bowl. You’ll work in a team with guidance from an experienced Senior Software Engineer throughout the day.

The programme has three practical stages:

  • Build it: Your team receives a design brief and uses a prompt-based AI coding tool to produce a working solution as quickly as possible.
  • Swap it: Halfway through the day, teams exchange projects. You’ll take ownership of someone else’s build, similar to encountering an unfamiliar codebase in a new role.
  • Make it safe: You’ll review the exchanged app using Yorkshire Software Solutions’ Vibe Code Review (VCR) framework. The review covers access and permissions, exposed keys and secrets, data handling, payments and error handling.

Rather than stopping when an app appears to work, the event challenges you to investigate what is happening under the hood. Each team will leave with a written verdict on the app it reviewed, plus the VCR framework to apply again in future projects.

Who should attend?

The hackathon is designed for university students studying computer science, software engineering or related subjects, recent graduates, junior software engineers, and anyone already building, or hoping to start building, with AI tools. No previous experience with AI coding tools is required. Bring a laptop, curiosity and a willingness to learn.

More experienced software engineers can also get involved: the organiser intends to place at least one senior engineer with each team to provide guidance and help solve problems.
