About this event

What to expect

Whether you've explored AI chatbots as a user but never built one yourself, this hands-on workshop by PyData Chicago will take you from zero to deployment in just two hours. Led by Gus Cavanaugh, a former strategy consultant turned GTM leader in data and analytics, you'll build a production-ready AI agent from scratch using Python and modern AI tools.

This hybrid workshop combines practical coding with real-world AI techniques. You'll implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to create a chatbot that can answer questions about uploaded documents, integrate web search for current information, and deploy your application to the cloud. The entire workshop runs in cloud environments, so there's no need for local installation or setup — just bring your laptop and be ready to code.

What You'll Build

By the end of this session, you'll have created:

  • An AI-powered chatbot that answers questions about uploaded documents
  • RAG implementation with vector search and semantic retrieval
  • Web search integration for accessing current information
  • A professional web interface using Streamlit
  • A cloud-deployed application ready to run immediately
  • Portfolio-ready code you can customize and share

The workshop uses Python, Streamlit, Claude AI, and RAG techniques to build something genuinely useful. No AI experience is required — just basic Python knowledge and willingness to learn.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for developers, data professionals, and anyone interested in building AI applications who hasn't yet created their first agent. Whether you're a Python developer curious about AI, a data analyst looking to add AI skills, or a professional wanting hands-on experience with modern AI tools, this session will give you practical, deployable code.

Gus Cavanaugh brings real-world experience teaching Python, data, and AI through local meetups, with a focus on helping people get hands-on with modern tools. His teaching style emphasizes practical outcomes over theory — you'll leave with working code, not just concepts.

Event Format

This is a hybrid event, so you can attend either in person in Chicago or online via Zoom. In-person attendees will gather at the AlphaSense offices at 200 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 1100, where pizza and soft drinks will be provided. The venue is sponsored by AlphaSense (formerly Tegus), a leader in AI-driven market intelligence tru
