About this event

What to expect

Practice the crucial skill of reading and understanding unfamiliar code in this collaborative, language-agnostic meetup designed for developers at all experience levels. As AI-generated code becomes increasingly prevalent, the ability to quickly comprehend and evaluate code written by others—or by machines—is more important than ever, yet it's a skill we rarely exercise deliberately.

What to Expect

Inspired by the Code Reading Club methodology, this session takes a structured, guided approach to code comprehension. You'll receive a surprise code excerpt and work through a series of carefully designed prompts and activities that help you explore the code from multiple angles. The beauty of this format is that it works regardless of your familiarity with the programming language—fresh perspectives often catch things that experienced developers miss.

This month's session will be facilitated by Dan Jutan, who will guide you through reading and discussing the code sample. You'll learn not just about the code itself, but about different approaches to understanding unfamiliar codebases—insights that will help you become a better mentor, teammate, and developer.

Who Should Attend

This meetup welcomes everyone from coding newcomers to seasoned professionals. If you understand what a variable is, you're qualified to participate. Whether you're just starting your development journey or you've been writing code for decades, you'll gain valuable skills and perspectives. The collaborative format means you'll learn as much from other attendees' observations as from the code itself.

Practical Details

Bring colored pencils or highlighters and a pen or pencil—you'll be marking up and annotating the code as part of the reading process. The venue at PrizePicks offers visitor parking in the Star Metal Building deck (accessible via Vidalia Lane off 11th Street). MARTA users can take the 12 or 14 bus from Midtown Station, with free rail-to-bus transfers.

The evening starts with networking at 6:00 PM, followed by the structured code reading session from 6:45-8:00 PM. You'll have opportunities to discuss your observations, hear diverse interpretations, and discover new strategies for approaching unfamiliar code.
