About this event

What to expect

Like a book club, but for code—this hands-on session helps developers at any level sharpen their code-reading skills through collaborative exploration of unfamiliar code. As AI-generated code becomes increasingly prevalent, the ability to read and understand code you didn't write is more critical than ever, yet it's a skill developers rarely practice deliberately.

What to Expect

This language-agnostic meetup brings together developers of all experience levels to read a surprise code excerpt together. Through guided prompts and structured activities, you'll explore how different people approach reading code, learning new strategies from peers while discovering that fresh eyes often spot what experts overlook. Whether you're familiar with the language presented or seeing it for the first time, your perspective adds value to the discussion.

Session Format

The evening begins with check-in and networking at 6:00 PM, followed by a welcome and introduction kick-off at 6:30 PM. The main code reading activity starts at 6:45 PM, where facilitator Dan Jutan will guide participants through a series of questions and actions as the group collectively reads a piece of unfamiliar code. The session wraps up at 8:00 PM with closing thoughts and next steps.

This meetup is equally valuable for newcomers to development and seasoned professionals—if you know what a variable is, this is for you. The collaborative format helps developers become better mentors and teammates by understanding how others approach code comprehension.

Practical Details

The event takes place at the PrizePicks office in West Midtown's Star Metal Building, with visitor parking available in the building's deck (turn onto Vidalia Lane off of 11th Street). For those using public transport, both the 12 and 14 bus routes departing from Midtown Station serve West Midtown, with free transfers from rail.

Attendees should bring colored pencils or highlighters, plus a pen or pencil for writing on code. The hands-on nature of the session means you'll be actively annotating and marking up the code as you read through it.

Hosted and sponsored by PrizePicks, this session is part of REFACTR.TECH's ongoing community events. Learn more about the Code Reading Club format and how these sessions help developers build essential skills for working with modern codebases.
