What to expect

Explore how human and artificial intelligence differ at this in-person psychology and AI talk in Edinburgh on 2 September 2026.

What to expect

The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence asks a fundamental question: what is intelligence? Speaker Tony Prescott will approach that question at the intersection of AI and psychology, comparing artificial systems with the human brain and examining how each handles key aspects of intelligent experience.

The talk will focus on three particularly revealing areas:

  • Sensing: how humans and AI receive and interpret information
  • Memory: the different ways biological and artificial systems retain and use knowledge
  • Sense of self: what self-awareness means when discussing people and machines

Rather than treating AI purely as a technical subject, this session places it alongside human cognition. It offers attendees an opportunity to think more carefully about the language used around intelligence and the similarities and differences between minds and machines.

Format and schedule

This is an in-person talk with networking and audience Q&A, organised by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. The full programme runs from 6:00pm to 7:45pm, with the advertised talk beginning at 6:30pm:

  • 6:00pm: Arrival, refreshments and networking
  • 6:30pm: Start of the talk
  • 7:30pm: Questions and answers

The Q&A provides space to explore the ideas raised by the presentation, while the opening refreshments offer time to meet others interested in AI, technology and psychology.

Who should attend?

The event is relevant to technology professionals, AI practitioners, psychologists, researchers, students and anyone curious about cognition or the implications of artificial intelligence. It should also appeal to people who want a conceptual perspective on AI rather than a product demonstration or hands-on coding workshop. No prerequisites or required experience level are listed on the event page.

Venue

The session takes place at Skyscanner Limited, Quartermile One, 15 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh EH3 9EN. Attendees should plan to arrive from 6:00pm if they would like refreshments and networking before Tony Prescott’s talk begins.…
