What to expect

Explore how AI is reshaping research, expertise and scholarship at this 90-minute panel hosted by Edinburgh Futures Institute on 17 September 2026.

Research in a changing knowledge landscape

Artificial intelligence is transforming how knowledge is produced, analysed and shared across scientific discovery, creative practice, the humanities and the social sciences. This in-person discussion will examine what that transformation means for researchers, universities and society, moving beyond individual tools to consider the wider opportunities, challenges and responsibilities facing research institutions.

The panel will address fundamental questions about the future of scholarship: How might AI change researchers’ work? How will it affect the way evidence is created, interpreted and communicated? What happens to established ideas of expertise when AI becomes part of the research process? And how should universities define their contribution to society in this new era of knowledge creation?

Topics under discussion will include:

  • How AI is changing research methods across disciplines
  • New opportunities for scientific discovery and creative practice
  • The implications of AI for expertise, evidence and academic authority
  • How knowledge may be produced, analysed and shared in the future
  • The responsibilities of universities and research institutions as adoption grows

Panel and format

The 90-minute panel features Devi Sridhar, Christopher Smith and Michael Rovatsos, with Marion Thain as chair. Its interdisciplinary scope makes it relevant to researchers, academics, university leaders, students and anyone interested in the relationship between AI, knowledge and public life. This is a discussion-led event rather than a technical workshop, so attendees do not need specialist AI or coding experience.

Presented by Edinburgh Futures Institute, the event takes place in person at the Level 0 Event Space, Edinburgh Futures Institute, 1 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh EH3 9EF. Doors open at 9:30am, with the panel running from 10am to 11:30am on Thursday 17 September 2026. Its setting in Edinburgh offers an opportunity to hear multiple disciplinary perspectives on one of the defining issues facing contemporary research.…
