About this event

What to expect

How is artificial intelligence reshaping the fundamental ways we communicate, learn, and share stories? This panel discussion at The Royal Society of Edinburgh brings together diverse voices to examine how AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are transforming reading, writing, learning, and translation across cultural and educational contexts.

The event features expert speakers from different backgrounds who will each deliver a 10–15-minute talk exploring the practical, ethical, and creative dimensions of AI in storytelling. Topics include the evolving relationship between human creativity and AI assistance, the role of AI in language preservation and translation, and the broader implications for how we express ourselves and understand each other.

What to Expect

This discussion-style evening will tackle critical questions facing writers, educators, translators, and content creators:

  • How do humans and AI collaborate effectively in creative and educational work?
  • Are we becoming co-creators, cautious adopters, or thoughtful sceptics?
  • What does the future hold as AI tools become more sophisticated?
  • How might AI change our relationship with language itself?

Following the panel presentations, you'll have the opportunity to engage directly with speakers during an extended Q&A session, making this an interactive exploration rather than a one-way lecture.

Who Should Attend

This event welcomes anyone curious about AI's impact on language, culture, and education — whether you're a writer experimenting with AI tools, an educator adapting to new technologies, a translator navigating machine learning systems, or simply someone interested in how technology shapes human expression. No technical background required.

Please note: The discussion may include references to sensitive historical content, including the Holocaust, in the context of translation and storytelling. Attendees are welcome to step out and return at any point.

Hosted by the Scottish AI Alliance, this event takes place at the historic Royal Society of Edinburgh on George Street, providing an inspiring setting for exploring how ancient human practices meet cutting-edge technology. Find more AI events in Edinburgh to continue your learning journey.
