What to expect

Explore how financial technology, regulation and the digital economy are reshaping finance at this two-day conference in Edinburgh on 2–3 September 2026.

Hosted at the University of Edinburgh Business School, the Edinburgh Financial Technology Conference brings academics, policymakers and finance professionals into the same conversation. Its purpose is to stimulate debate and research around financial innovation, examine the economic questions created by applying technology to finance, and consider how these changes affect welfare and consumer outcomes.

Organised by the Edinburgh Centre for Financial Innovations at the University of Edinburgh Business School with FinTech Scotland, the conference is grounded in a fast-changing regulatory landscape. Rather than treating policy and innovation as separate subjects, it will explore how regulation can influence technological adoption and help shape the future of financial services.

Regulation as a catalyst for innovation

A featured panel, “How regulation is helping drive technological innovation in financial service”, will be chaired by Clare Reid, Strategic Innovation Director at FinTech Scotland. The discussion will consider how regulation can act as a catalyst for innovation, drawing on the experiences of the award-winning Financial Regulation Innovation Lab alongside fintech and academic collaborators.

Key themes include:

  • Financial innovation and the development of the digital economy
  • Economic and welfare implications of technology in finance
  • Regulation’s role in enabling technological innovation
  • Technology adoption as a way to simplify compliance
  • Collaboration between fintech companies, researchers and regulatory stakeholders
  • The potential for innovation to improve consumer outcomes

Who should attend?

This conference is relevant to researchers studying fintech, economics or regulation; policymakers and regulatory professionals; finance leaders; fintech founders and practitioners; and anyone working on responsible technology adoption in financial services. Its mix of research-led debate, professional insight and a focused panel discussion should particularly suit attendees who want to understand not only what is changing in finance, but also the institutional and economic forces influencing that change.…
