What to expect

With Scotland's digital future hanging in the balance, this parliamentary election hustings offers a rare opportunity to directly challenge the politicians seeking your vote on how AI and technology should serve democracy, communities, and the economy. Taking place at the prestigious Bayes Centre at the University of Edinburgh, this hybrid event brings together MSPs from across the political spectrum alongside leading academics and industry experts to tackle one of the defining questions of our generation.

The panel features Daniel Johnson MSP (Scottish Labour), Miles Briggs MSP (Scottish Conservatives), Ben Macpherson MSP (SNP), and Andy Williamson (Liberal Democrats), who will face direct questioning about their parties' visions for Scotland's digital economy. They'll be joined by Brian Baglow from Level Up Scotland's National Games Strategy, Professor Fiona McNeill from Edinburgh University, and Professor Marion Thain from the Edinburgh Futures Institute, with Ethan Claridge chairing the discussion.

This hustings explores critical policy questions around AI regulation, digital infrastructure investment, data governance, and how Scotland can build a tech sector that benefits all citizens rather than concentrating power and wealth. Whether you're concerned about algorithmic accountability, platform monopolies, digital skills development, or ensuring AI serves public good over private profit, this is your chance to hold future legislators accountable before they shape the rules that will govern Scotland's technological future.

The event is organised in partnership with ScotlandIS, Scotland's trade body for the digital technologies industry, and the Bayes Centre, ensuring both business and academic perspectives inform the discussion. Attend in person at the Bayes Centre on Potterrow in Edinburgh or join the online stream to participate in what promises to be a robust debate about the intersection of technology, economy, and democracy in Scotland.

This hustings is part of the broader National Conversations initiative, which facilitates public dialogue on critical policy issues ahead of elections. Whether you work in tech, are concerned about AI's societal impact, or simply want to understand where parties stand on digital policy, this event offers essential insight into how Scotland's next parliament might govern the digital age.
