About this event

What to expect

Join codebar Derby for a hands-on programming workshop at the University of Derby on 14 May 2026. This monthly community event brings together aspiring developers and experienced mentors in an inclusive, supportive environment focused on making tech more diverse and welcoming.

codebar is a global non-profit initiative dedicated to helping underrepresented groups learn programming skills through free, peer-led workshops. Whether you're taking your first steps in coding or looking to expand your technical knowledge, these sessions provide personalised support tailored to your learning goals and experience level.

What to Expect

The workshop runs from 18:00 to 20:30 BST and follows codebar's proven learning model. Students work one-on-one or in small groups with volunteer coaches who provide guidance on various programming languages, frameworks, and technologies. You'll have the opportunity to work through tutorials at your own pace, ask questions, and receive immediate feedback from experienced developers.

The session is open to anyone from underrepresented groups in tech, including but not limited to women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of colour. No prior programming experience is required—beginners are especially welcome. Bring your laptop and any questions you have about web development, mobile apps, databases, or other programming topics.

Workshop Format

Each codebar workshop begins with optional food and networking, allowing you to connect with fellow learners and mentors before diving into coding. You'll then pair with a coach who will work with you throughout the evening, helping you progress through tutorials or debug your own projects. The relaxed, collaborative atmosphere encourages questions and experimentation.

Past attendees appreciate the supportive community, practical learning approach, and chance to build connections with Derby's tech scene. The workshops are organised by Michael Okolo and Omotayo Omoyemi, who are committed to creating an accessible learning environment for all participants.

Getting Involved

Both students and coaches are welcome to attend. If you're an experienced developer, consider volunteering as a coach to help others on their coding journey. Coaching is a rewarding way to give back to the community, improve your teaching skills, and meet like-minded developers.
