What to expect

Explore whether AI-assisted “vibe coding” democratises software creation or weakens technical competence at this Socratic discussion in Chiang Mai.

On Saturday 22 August 2026, from 12:00–3:00 PM ICT, Socrates Café – Chiang Mai brings a provocative debate about programming, artificial intelligence and cultural change to The Hideaway Cafe & Restaurant in Chiang Mai. Admission is 200 THB.

From compiler errors to conversational AI

Traditional programming has long demanded exact logical instructions: code either compiles or it does not. Vibe coding changes that relationship by allowing people to describe what they want in natural language and ask an AI to produce the software. This session examines what may be gained, and lost, when an unforgiving technical process becomes conversational, accommodating and able to interpret ambiguous intent.

The discussion places that transition within a wider philosophical and cultural framework. Drawing on Heather Mac Donald’s criticism of institutions that prioritise emotional safety over objective truth, and Helen Andrews’ critique of consensus-led corporate bureaucracy, the group will test whether vibe coding represents genuine technological progress, an illusion of competence or something more complicated. The event’s deliberately contentious title provides a starting point for examining claims about gender, language, logic and power rather than presenting a conventional technical tutorial.

Questions on the table

Participants will explore four central issues:

  • Friction and resilience: Does removing compiler errors and repeated failure reduce the antifragility developed through learning to code?
  • The bureaucracy of code: Does natural-language development transfer influence from logical specialists to people with stronger social and linguistic fluency?
  • Truth versus intent: Can conversational AI obscure the gap between what someone wants software to do and what the resulting system actually does?
  • Competence and access: Does a lower barrier democratise software creation, or leave users dependent on black-box systems they cannot repair when the underlying architecture fails?

A facilitated Socratic format…
