What to expect

The Institute of Computing for Climate Science Annual Summer School 2026 brings together researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of computing and climate science for an intensive week of hands-on learning and collaboration. Running from 13-17 July 2026 at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, this event is designed to equip climate scientists with modern software engineering practices, AI tools, and computational techniques essential for advancing climate research.

What You'll Learn

The programme covers a comprehensive range of technical skills critical for contemporary climate science:

  • Version control with Git and GitHub — both introductory and intermediate sessions to master collaborative development
  • Research Software Engineering (RSE) principles — writing higher-quality, more maintainable code with fewer bugs
  • Generative AI for software engineering — leveraging tools like ChatGPT and Claude effectively in scientific software development
  • Machine learning with PyTorch — practical applications in climate modelling
  • High Performance Computing (HPC) — understanding hardware, performance limits, programming models, profiling, and debugging
  • Differential programming, Random Forests, FTorch
  • Python bindings to compiled languages
  • Reproducibility in computing — ensuring your research can be verified and built upon

Who Should Attend

This Summer School is ideal for climate scientists, computational researchers, and anyone working with climate models who wants to strengthen their software engineering capabilities. The programme features a blend of keynote seminars, panel sessions, training workshops, scientific presentations, and collaborative events. Attendees should expect to participate in all parts of the five-day programme.

Expert-Led Training

You'll receive instruction from leading experts at the University of Cambridge, with sessions designed to provide both foundational knowledge and advanced techniques. The hands-on workshops ensure you leave with practical skills you can immediately apply to your research.

Costs and Bursaries

Attendance is free for members of the Schmidt Sciences community. External participants pay a registration fee starting at £150 for sessions only, £250 including formal dinner and socials, or £1,000
